The Significance of Gut Microbes in Health and Disease

Our intestines and gastrointestinal tract serve a multifaceted and intricate purpose beyond digestion. They play a vital role in the perpetual cycle of life. Recent scientific findings highlight the indispensable nature of these remarkable beings. Through the Gut-Brain Axis, they communicate with our brain, generating more than 400 neurotransmitters that contribute to our well-being. Their exceptional work, though invisible, is observable and comprehensible to those who pay attention.

What Happens

When You Throw A Banana Peel Out In Your Garden?

Decomposition occurs through bio degradation, a remarkable process carried out by bacteria, that converts matter into constituent molecules. Their crucial presence prevents the accumulation of lifeless remains and waste. Moreover, bacteria within our bodies synthesise vitamins, enzymes, and hormones, playing a vital role. They assist in the absorption of essential minerals and nutrients, impacting our health, appearance, brain function, and immune system. Beneficial bacteria faithfully aid in absorbing vital nutrients from our diet, ensuring overall well-being and attractiveness.

Gut Bacteria

Did You Know That We Are More Bacteria Than Humans?

Approximately 50 trillion bacteria reside in our gut, outnumbering human cells by 30 trillion. These microorganisms encompass 300 to 500 species and possess 2 million genes, compared to humans' 25,000 genes. Genes store intricate details about our bodies. Beneficial bacteria encode numerous functions in their 2 million genes. Unfortunately, these hardworking bacteria are malnourished due to changes in food quality. As a result, their numbers decline, affecting our health. An unhappy gut bacteria population leads to reduced immunity, obesity, diabetes, and various diseases. The Gut microbiota is crucial for overall well-being.

So How Did We Actually Begin To Neglect Our Better Halves?

  • Antibiotic Misuse
  • Caesarean sections
  • Life Style changes

Our Western Diet

The dietary shift since the Industrial Revolution has led to a significant change in our eating habits. Homemade meals have been replaced by processed foods like snacks, drinks, and unhealthy options. Grains and millet, such as rice, bread, biscuits, dosa, and idli, are now consumed at unprecedented levels. This shift has resulted in nutritional deficiencies for us and our partners. Moreover, we have neglected bacteria-rich foods like natural curd, sauerkraut, and simple vinegar and salt pickles, in favour of fried pickles and refrigerated yogurts instead. As a result, our intake of beneficial bacteria, known as "PRO-BIOTICS," has greatly decreased.

Other Man-Made Causes

Excessive focus on sanitization and sedentary lifestyles have reduced our exposure to beneficial bacteria. Antibiotic misuse and Caesarean sections are the main culprits behind this decline. Antibiotics, effective against harmful bacteria, also eliminate beneficial ones. Consumption of these medications without a prescription disrupts the balance and diversity of the gut flora. During birth, infants acquire beneficial bacteria through the ingestion of fluids in the birth canal, initiating colonisation of their sterile gut. Cesarean sections hinder this, leading to a deficiency of vital gut flora. Fortunately, supplements and exposure to beneficial bacteria can address this imbalance.
