Our love and craving for junk food is on the rise given the multitude of options available nowadays. But what keeps us so hooked on these killer foods? Studies show that, the
rats infected with the parasite, “Toxoplasma gondii” develop an attraction towards cats which can prove fatal. When an infected rat smells cat urine, its brain activity is increased in regions associated with sexual attraction. According to researchers, evidence says that the Toxoplasma triggers an innate fear response, causing a type of sexual attraction towards the normally dislikes cat odor. This makes the rat run towards the cat instead of running away from it. This lure can result in a deadly end for the rat. Does this love affair sound similar to our harmful affiliation with junk food?
1 in 5 deaths globally, which is equivalent to million dealths per year are due to health complicationsdevelop by eating junk foods. It is also the leading contributor for a range of chronic diseases including heart disease, certain cancers, obesity, COPD, diabetes just to name a few.Junk food tricks the brain into feeling satiated more temporarily than the whole foods. It can muddle our brain’s satiety-control mechanism, sending our appetites into hyperdrive. This causes a more permanent damage to our health, leading to early deaths. These greasy cheeseburgers and fries, bag of crunchy chips, and fizzy soda, what makes it all so irresistible? Scientists define such cravings with a relatively new term: Hedonic hunger – a powerful desire for food in the absence of any need for it; what we experience when our belly is full but our brain is still ravenous . The high fat, high sugar junk foods affect the brain just like the drug and alcohol. It acts on the reward center of the brain. Hence develops craving and addiction which gets stronger over time. These trans fats in junk foods causes inflammation in the blood vessels and tissues making the organs like heart ,liver, kidney, uterus etc.. susceptible to severe damage. This leads to deadly diseases like
- cardio vascular diseases
- Fatty liver ,diabetes mellitus
- PCOD
- Infertility , erectile dysfunction
A rat is supposed to run away from cat for it’s wellbeing. But when it is infected with this parasite taxoplasma, it adversely develops
irresistible attraction towards cat . This ends it’s life miserably. Unfortunately, we are attracted to this high fat and high sugar junks, unaware that it is killing us. Just like the rat, we develop an unending love affair which may end our life. So it’s essential to break up with this dreadful love affair to have a healthy gut and good immunity.
