Constipation most commonly occurs when waste or stool moves too slowly through the digestive tract or cannot be eliminated effectively, this may cause the stool to become hard and dry. The accumulation of waste in the body can cause psychological and physiological problems to the patient, which can lead to even worse conditons like Hemorrhoids, Anal fissures, Diverticulitis and Fecal impaction.
What is Constipation?
Constipation most commonly occurs when waste or stool moves too slowly through the digestive tract or cannot be eliminated effectively, this may cause the stool to become hard and dry. The accumulation of waste in the body can cause psychological and physiological problems to the patient, which can lead to even worse conditions like Haemorrhoids, Anal fissures, Diverticulitis and Fecal impaction.
Cause of Constipation?
A large group within the adult Indian population suffers from constipation, which can be attributed to two main reasons. The first is impaired movement in the alimentary canal and impaired digestion in the intestine due to disturbed microflora in the gut. Hypothyroidism can also cause constipation. In some cases parasitic infections can also cause constipation due to the toxins produced by the parasite. Bad dietary habits like overconsumption of junk and fried foods can also lead to constipation. Overgrowth of methanogenic bacteria in the large intestine and increased intake of food rich in iron, which promotes methanogenic bacterial growth can cause increased production of methane, which leads to reduced peristalsis.
Treatment for Constipation
Constipation can be caused by a variety of factors, and we need to address them in a uniform fashion. We treat the gut using mainly Probiotics, Prebiotics, and Herbal medicines.
Natural Triple Therapy using Probiotics: If the gut microbiota is disturbed, it may lead to impaired absorption and slow movement of the bowel. Restoring the Good bacteria can alleviate some of the symptoms that may be the primary cause of constipation.
Natural Triple Therapy using Prebiotics and a Controled Diet: Including more soluble fiber like flax seeds, fenugreek seeds and sesame seeds in the diet can help in easy movement of the stool. Patients are mostly put on a 10 day fruit diet to ease the digestive load on the body. A fat-rich diet using coconut oil and ghee can be laxative in nature, increasing peristaltic movement. Adding a magnesium supplement to the diet can also help palliate some of the symptoms, as it helps in muscle contraction.
Natural Triple Therapy using Herbal Medicines: Many herbs are known to have a laxative nature.
Alternative treatments include
- Basti is an ayurvedic enema based treatment that helps in clearing the stool from the colon using oil and herbal medicines.
- Probiotic enema: buttermilk can be used as an enema by injecting it into the patient’s rectum to help stimulate a bowel movement. They’re typically done to treat cases of severe constipation.
